우린 미네소타의 농장에서 
여느 형제들처럼 함께 자랐죠 
열심히 일했어요 
부모님은 농장에서오직 일만 하셨고
 
가난한 환경 속에서 우리는 
추위를 잊기 위해 무엇이든지 했고 
그러면서 꿈을 키웠습니다 
정말 추웠소
 
우린 맑은 여름 밤엔 
마당에 나와 자곤 했죠 
긴 겨울에 비해 너무 짧은 여름이었지만 
해만 지면 밖으로 나와 
잠이 들 때까지 서로 
저 반짝이는 별들과 
바깥 세상에 있을지 모를 우리 같은 이들과 
우리가 가고 싶은 곳들에 대한 끝없는 이야기를 하다보면 
가난이 별개 아니란 생각을 하며 잠이 들곤 했다오 
정말 많은 얘길 나누었죠
 
두 분 사이에... 무슨 일이 있었나요?
 
성경처럼 오래된 이야기죠 카인과 아벨 같은 
분노와 헛된 자존심에 그놈의 술이 있었죠 
10년이나 등지고 지낸 형제였소
 
그렇게 분노했던 일도... 
지금에 와서 보니아무것도 아닌 걸 
이제는 평화로이 함께 앉아 
별을 보고 싶소 
그 옛날에 그랬던 것처럼...
 
그럼요 그렇게 되실 겁니다
 

 
Lyle and I grew up close as brothers 
could be. We were raised on a farm up 
in Moorhead, Minnesota. Worked so 
hard...my ma and pa pretty much 
killed themselves trying to make that 
farm work.
 
Me and Lyle...we made games out of 
our chores. A day's work'd go quicker 
when it was just the two of us. We'd 
make up different races and wagers just 
to get our mind off the cold...Christ it 
was cold....
 
He and I used to sleep out in the yard 
every summer night it wasn't pouring. 
After nine months of winter we couldn't 
get enough of summer. We'd bunk 
down as soon as the sun went down 
and lie there talkin' ourselves to sleep. 
Talk about the stars...and other planets, 
whether there might be other people 
like us out there, 'bout all the places we 
wanted to go...made our trials seem 
smaller. We pretty much talked each 
other through growin' up.
 
(Funny but lookin' up at these stars 
tonight and feelin' him so close...makes 
me feel I'm right back there again. All 
those years ago.)
 
What happened between you two?
 
Well that's a story old as the 
bible...Cain and Abel. Anger...vanity 
...mix those things up with liquor and 
you get two brothers not talkin' for ten 
years....
 
(It doesn't really matter anymore.
 
I've lived on this earth for 73 years. I'm 
a humble man in the world but my life 
is so full that from where I sit now I'll 
be damned if I know how I did it 
all...growin' up on a hardscrabble 
farm...then went to war... 
...God help us. 
I had seven children. We lived in every 
part of this beautiful country...I loved a 
woman for 40 years...and then she 
died. 
've got two daughters...one we lost 
track of back in '74...don't even know 
if she's alive. Got in with a mean fella.)
 
So...whatever it was made me and Lyle 
so mad doesn't matter to me now...I 
want to make peace...I want to sit with 
him again and look up at all the stars.
 
Well sir, I say amen to that.

데이빗 린치 (David Lynch) 감독의 1999년 작
스트레이트 스토리 (The Straight Story, 1999).
이 영화는 우리나라에서 2001년 개봉하여
서울관객 수 8,570명(http://www.kofic.or.kr 참조)을 불러 모았다.
관객 수는 영화의 감동과 꼭 연관이 있는 것은 아닌 것 같다.
영화관에 가는 목적과 더 부합하는 게 아닌가 하는 생각이 든다.
어쨌든 난 이 영화를 보기 전 노인들이 나오는 지루한 영화일
것이란 편견을 가졌었다. 그리고 영화를 보면서도 뭐 그럴 수도
있겠다고 생각했다. 그러나 마음이라는 것이 머리에 있든
가슴에 있든 뜨거워지고 찌릿해 지는 그런 느낌을 이 영화를
보는 내내 느낄 수 있었다.
